UC Market Headed in the Right Direction

on March 28, 2012 by Editor

Here at Seamless Enterprise, we don’t usually bother with following the “markets” for various goods and services and solutions. For the most part, we know that isn’t your biggest concern.

If you’ve found a UC solution that really works for you, it isn’t important whether the vendor you bought it from has a 10 percent share of the particular market or a 40 percent share. As long as you can be sure the vendor will be around for a while to provide service and support – and we presume you vetted that pretty well before making the purchase – the details of who sells how much to whom this year or next year are secondary.

But sometimes general trends can be revealing, and that’s what we spotted in a NoJitter post by analyst Blair Pleasant the other day. She says it appears that the UC market has finally come out of the recession-induced blahs that it had been in for a couple of years and is back to some decent growth.

Based on the chart she references (see below), it appears Pleasant sees the UC market more than doubling in the next four years, both in terms of the total market, which includes all UC-enabled equipment, and the “true” UC segment of that, which she breaks out as that portion clearly being used as part of a UC solution.

Again, specific numbers aren’t as important as what this tells us about the overall direction this portends for UC. After all, the first and most important element of the market is enterprise and midsized/small business demand.

For example, Pleasant says the UC components showing the most growth are conferencing and collaboration, as companies bring these capabilities in-house as part of their UC adoption. She pegs those elements, plus the related desktop and mobile video, as the strongest drivers of this growing market. And honestly, a growing market is good news for everyone, from the enterprises and users benefiting from these applications to the vendors selling them.
