In case you missed it – hey, you're busy people and you can't get around to reading everything – Sprint's own Mike Fitz sat down for an in-depth interview with the good folks at Business Solutions magazine. The topic was Unified Communications, and Mike, our wireline VP, had interesting things to say, as always.

You can check out the entire article, but to summarize, Mike pointed to three significant trends, all converging in such a way as to drive interest and investment in UC. More...

Exploring a New Galaxy

on October 18, 2012 by Christopher Glenn

I’ve written so much about my HTC EVO in this blog that it now seems appropriate to share my experience with my new Samsung Galaxy S III, which I had to purchase after  accidentally damaging my EVO on a recent trip to Saint Paul. I hated to see my trusty EVO go, but the silver lining is that I get to write about a new device.

Given my focus on enterprise convergence, I am always drawn to smartphone features that blur the line between wireline and wireless. The Galaxy S III is my first device with Google Wallet, which takes advantage of Near Field Communications (NFC).More...

If You Do Just One Thing – Create the Best Mobile Website

on October 17, 2012 by Heidi Gigler

Facebook just reached its billionth customer, and the resounding focus for the next billion is mobile, says CEO Mark Zuckerberg. It’s no surprise that more people every day are communicating and conducting business on smartphones and tablets.

Already, more mobile phones are being shipped around the world than computers. In fact, based on sheer numbers alone, almost everyone in the world has a mobile phone. There were one billion active subscribers in 2000, and almost six billion today. With a  world population of just over seven billion, the business opportunity for mobile is big. More...

Mobile App Developers Riding High in IT Hiring Plans

on October 16, 2012 by Editor

It's always nice to hear good news, but even better when the timing is just right. That was our reaction when we spotted an InformationWeek item about the latest IT hiring trends.

Art Wittman's article, based on an IT staffing survey by the magazine, showed that the top hiring category is ... application development. This was especially timely, with Sprint's 12th annual Open Solutions conference coming up in less than two weeks (October 24-25). Combining the invaluable information and networking for developers that the conference offers with a "hot" job market (InformationWeek's description) makes for a real winner. By the way, you can register here for the conference. More...

Sprint once again has been saluted for its efforts at minimizing its impact on Mother Earth.

Among those companies, Sprint was the top-ranked U.S. wireless carrier. Additionally, Sprint was named U.S. Sector Leader on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index North America, for the second consecutive year.More...

The 180 degrees of IT

on October 10, 2012 by Heidi Gigler

It’s impossible not to notice the changing role of enterprise IT. While there continues to be a need for network management and expertise, IT is being called both to do more and to do things differently. How we live and work has fundamentally changed; for IT, these changes amount to a 180-degree turn in how they support and lead their organizations.

First, there is no perimeter to protect anymore. It wasn’t long ago that security was all about protecting the perimeter, limiting Internet access, and restricting mobile devices to an exclusive few. The thinking was that if IT could just guard the network perimeter and limit access, the company and its intellectual assets would be safe. More...

Unified Communications Takes Shape

on October 03, 2012 by Editor

There are three major trends currently shaping Unified Communications, according to our own Mike Fitz. Mike recently shared these trends with Brian Albright, editor of Business Solutions Magazine.

These trends are user demands for more mobility and portability, CIOs becoming more focused on finding ways to support line of business activities (not just tech enablement), and the expansion and improvement of UC technology. More...

on October 02, 2012 by Heidi Gigler

In a recent webinar, Gartner identified what it considers the most hyped emerging technologies for the coming year. Innovative and trendy for sure, this annual disclosure can give pause to even the most cutting edge IT groups. And that’s the point. More...

Misconceptions in the Sky

on October 01, 2012 by Braj Thakur

If there was ever a perfect example of why it's good to consult more than one news source to get the whole story, it's a little item about the cloud and people's perceptions of it.

Recently, an item in Fierce Enterprise Communications caught my eye. With the headline "Workplace of the Future Will Be in the Cloud," I plunged into the story, which concerns a Citrix-sponsored survey of just over 1,000 U.S. adults about the cloud. More...
