The Enterprise e-Now Model

on December 17, 2012 by Heidi Gigler

OK, so e-Now may not be a real term, at least yet, but the essence is that since so much of what “we do” we do online, with that comes the expectation that “we must have what we want, now.”  In my last blog, I spoke of the e-everything phenomena. Couple that with the “gotta have it now” mentality and this puts new demands on the enterprise. More...

Industrial Internet

on December 05, 2012 by Christopher Glenn

GE CEO Jeff Immelt’s guest post on GigaOm this week focused on the arrival of the "Industrial Internet," which he says will surpass the magnitude of the development and adoption of the consumer Internet.

Immelt defines the Industrial Internet as an open, global network that connects people, data, and machines. The Industrial Internet leverages the cloud to connect intelligent machines that sense and report a broad array of data, helping people find meaning that would not be obvious without this level of connectivity and analytical intelligence. The New App Economy

on October 25, 2012 by Christopher Glenn

Anant Jhingran of Apigee recently opined on GigaOm that our Big Data future will require data marketplaces and data syndication models that few enterprises are currently prepared to support. If one follows the trend toward singularity, it should be clear that an enterprise’s ability to quickly acquire new data sources will require a marketplace that is somewhat akin to the NASDAQ. In other words, it would allow data set contracts to be opened or closed in a matter of minutes or seconds. More...

Paying Attention to the Hype

on October 02, 2012 by Heidi Gigler

In a recent webinar, Gartner identified what it considers the most hyped emerging technologies for the coming year. Innovative and trendy for sure, this annual disclosure can give pause to even the most cutting edge IT groups. And that’s the point. More...

The Future Force of Mobility

on September 26, 2012 by Heidi Gigler

Gartner calls it the Nexus of Forces – the synergy of four platforms or movements that are happening all at once and depend on one another – Mobile, Social Media, Cloud, and Information. These forces are the future and the focus on which IT would be wise to devote resources and strategic thought.More...

Business Intelligence is Big Business

on September 13, 2012 by Heidi Gigler

Looking at the as-a-service smorgasbord, can you guess which one tops the list in terms of growth? Number one is Business Intelligence (and Analytics) as-a-Service (BIaaS).

BIaaS can trace its roots to "Big Data." Companies are striving to make sense of the ever-growing amounts of data – be it from sources such as company databases, CRM tools, and social media. Already a $12 billion market, says Gartner, business intelligence (BI) and analytics is big business – whether premises-based or in the cloud. More...

Big Data Security

on August 24, 2012 by Christopher Glenn

There is little doubt that the promises of “big data” comes with risk. Steve Durbin, global vice president of the Information Security Forum (ISF), breaks down these risks into five areas: cybersecurity, data in the cloud, consumerization, interconnected supply chains, and privacy.

Cybersecurity is primary, because cybercriminals are getting more organized and are using more sophisticated techniques and tools. Even if the risk is small, a breach can wreak havoc within an organization, damaging reputations, creating substantial legal liability, and in the worst case, ruining companies financially. More...

How to Predict What Your Customer Wants Next

on August 16, 2012 by Christopher Glenn

One of the biggest drivers of the converged network is “big data,” as enterprises capture massive amounts of data from every customer interaction and analyze it to predict future sales. One company managing this data really well today is Netflix.

I originally registered for Netflix streaming for research purposes. I have spent a lot of my career developing algorithms to capture the relationship between countless variables that drive business productivity.More...

iPad Dominating the Enterprise BYOD Movement

on May 16, 2012 by Christopher Glenn

GigaOm recently released a free report, “Enterprise mobility perceptions among IT decision makers,” that examines cloud computing, big data, and enterprise mobility. The report highlights data collected by GigaOm from 304 enterprise IT decision makers.

The findings included an observation that, while 80 percent of all enterprises support mobile phones as part of their infrastructure, the size of the business seemed to have little impact on a company’s decision to support such mobility. The report also provides a glimpse into the market share for iPhone, Android, Blackberry, and Windows devices (I won’t spoil the suspense as I hope you’ll go grab your own copy of the report), as well as some insight into application support. The Art of Business Intelligence

on April 26, 2012 by Heidi Gigler

In a recent webinar, Ten Changes to Maximize the Impact of Your Business Intelligence Strategy, Gartner presented some fresh ideas on how to approach the analysis of so much data, making it useful for the enterprise. There is no doubt an effective business intelligence (BI) strategy includes IT, but what else? Gartner says the secret can be found by asking three questions: More...
