Free Shipping and the Enterprise

on December 13, 2011 by Heidi Gigler

Kudos to the retail successes of Cyber Monday – record-breaking sales despite a not-so-booming economy. The online shopping day that occurs the Monday following Thanksgiving resulted in $1.8 billion in sales by one estimate, 22 percent more than last year. Super Internet giant Amazon.com experienced a 52 percent sales increase on Cyber Monday compared to 2010. Incredible!  Just as surprising, the top five Internet retailers after Amazon are also brick-and-mortar stores: Walmart, Best Buy, Target, and Apple. Strong retail brands are clearly proving their staying power in cyberspace. More...

The Face of Convergence in 2012

on December 07, 2011 by Heidi Gigler

Convergence is ultimately about connecting – more, faster, easier. We live in a world where billions of people are connected through the Internet. More content is created in a single minute online than in a single year back in the 1990s. According to IDC, the "digital universe" – the amount of information and content created and stored digitally - will skyrocket from 1.8 ZB (zettabytes) in 2011 to more than 7 ZB by 2015 with 90 percent of that coming from digital content in the form of graphics and video. What the Enterprise can Learn from the Tablet Phenomenon

on November 17, 2011 by Heidi Gigler

Today, tablets are the choice of executives and employees. Many employees even buy their own if the company does not issue one.  Everyone wants one, and with good reasons. What can enterprise IT take away from the rapid adoption of the tablet over the past year and a half? More...

Farewell to the PC?

on November 10, 2011 by Heidi Gigler

The modern PC turned 30 years old this year. That is a long life for any technology (with the exception of Ethernet). The personal computer has come a long way and permanently transformed business processes .  Yet, says one of the creators of the original PC, “the PC is going the way of the vacuum tube, typewriter, vinyl records, CRT, and incandescent light bulbs." That seems hard to believe today, but it may not be so far-fetched in the future. More...

The Lexicon of Technology

on November 01, 2011 by Heidi Gigler

Techspeak:  A language and set of vocabulary, including slang, specifically used to communicate within the technology industry (as defined by this blogger).  While techspeak has not yet made it into The Oxford English Dictionary, or Wikipedia, more than 400 new words did in 2011. We talk about the speed at which technology changes.  It makes sense that a new vocabulary of words and acronyms would flourish too. More...

Managed Services – The Next Frontier

on October 27, 2011 by Heidi Gigler

It’s been said that technology changes at the speed of light. Take cloud computing, for example. Gartner just released its Top 10 Strategic Technology Trends for 2012 report, and the cloud moved from the No. 1 spot to the No. 10 spot over the course of this year. More...

Managed Services or Cloud Computing?

on September 27, 2011 by Heidi Gigler

Both, most likely. We hear these terms used so frequently and interchangeably that they seem to be the same, indistinguishable service. While they may be complementary, they are distinctly different.

Cloud computing, at its simplest, may be defined as an architecture that allows a user to access an application, software,or data using the Internet. Google Apps is a great example of cloud computing for business productivity such as email, word processing, presentations, and spreadsheets.  Salesforce.com is another example of cloud computing where the application sits in the cloud, and the enterprise is not responsible for any hardware or software. In fact, companies pay for only the service they need, and the service can be scaled up or down on demand. More...

The Taming of TMI

on September 19, 2011 by Heidi Gigler

Too Much Information (TMI). We are inundated. How do companies and their employees make sense of this infinite information? Here is a look at the challenges and how businesses can respond:

Accuracy – How do we know what we are reading is the truth? Wikipedia, for example, is edited by the population at-large. (Who are these authors?) Amazon.com and Yelp.com aggregate comments about user experiences. (Are the posted comments unbiased or written by the author’s brother, a disgruntled employee, or a representative from a company’s PR department?) In the business world, employees are challenged to find the most accurate and relevant information too. (Is this the most recent inventory report? Who is the source of this customer research – a social network chat room or an analyst firm?) More...
